Jesse “Chipper” Romaine Sherman, II, 76, of Wallisville, Texas, passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, Oct. 21, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 24, 1948, in Beaumont, Texas, Chipper was the cherished son of the late Bernice Inez Cross and Jesse Romaine Sherman, Sr. A lifelong resident and pillar of the Chambers County community, Chipper’s life was marked by devotion to family, faith, and service.

Chipper’s early education began in the one-room schoolhouse of Wallisville, continuing in Anahuac, where he graduated from Anahuac High School in the Class of 1966. He briefly attended Lee College to study computer science before returning home to assist his father in managing their family lumber business in Anahuac. Chipper ultimately became the owner and operator of Sherman Home Center, where he worked tirelessly until his retirement in October 2015. The lumberyard was not just a place of business. It was a vessel to serve people, visit with them, and share the gospel. He would always say “this is not my business; this is God’s business”.

A dedicated public servant, Chipper served for many years as a member of the volunteer fire department and EMS in Chambers County, exemplifying his commitment to the safety and well-being of his neighbors. He also helped shape the lives of many kids while coaching and umpiring little league baseball. His faith was central to his life. He began leading the choir at Eminence Baptist Church at age 14, demonstrating his dedication to service from a young age. He later became an active member of the First Baptist Church in Anahuac, where he served as a deacon, sang in the choir, and supported the church in any way he could.

Chipper was not only a hard-working man but also a beloved family man who treasured time spent with his loved ones. He had a deep love of nature and enjoyed spending time in the woods. In his younger years, he was an avid golfer. Those who knew Chipper remember his wit, humor, kindness, and the selfless dedication he showed to everyone. He was a source of wisdom, always offering the best advice to those around him.

After retirement, Chipper and his wife of 52 years, Martha Lanell Smith Sherman, embarked on a series of travels together. Their adventures took them across Europe, Alaska, Rushmore, Colorado, and beyond, creating cherished memories that spanned the Upper 50 states.

His life was not without many hardships, some small and some absolutely heartbreaking. But with each one, he learned more and more to place them at the foot of the cross and would seek guidance from God on the situation. God used these to mold and shape one of the most Christ-like men you have ever witnessed.

Chipper was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Jennifer Sherman; and his sisters, Sibbie Lancon and Judy Sherman. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Martha; his sons, Josh Sherman and wife Paige, Kirk Sherman and wife Ashley, all of Wallisville; grandchildren Mailey, Cullen, Jathan, Emily, Carter, and Colton; his siblings, Janet Waldie of Conroe, Karen “KK” Shepherd and husband Dave of Cypress, and Leslie Nelson and husband Jim of Wallisville; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends who will forever cherish his loving memory.

Chipper will be remembered for his unwavering faith, commitment to family, and the lasting impact he made on his community. His legacy is one of love, integrity, patience, and persistence. What a man. What a life. What a testimony of how God can transform us into his likeness if we allow him to. What a huge loss to all of us left behind.

Friends are invited to visit with the family beginning at 12pm, on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2024, at the First Baptist Church Anahuac, 405 Magnolia Avenue in Anahuac. A celebration of Chipper’s life will begin at 2pm at the church with Pastor Gary Hillyard officiating.
